Düsseldorf Panther at Darmstadt Diamonds

April 7, 2001 - Regular-Season

24:13

(8:0; 8:0; 0:10; 8:3)

The youth teams of the Düsseldorf Panthers and the Darmstadt Diamonds had the honor, to play the season opener in the new founded Federal Youth League, the GFL-Juniors. It came to an absolute highlight between two of the strongest German youth teams. Both teams battled three times before, and it have been always finals for the German Youth Championship and each one was dramatic until the end, in which the Panthers gained the upper-hand for two times. Also the last Junior Bowl victory of the Panthers in 1998 was won against the Diamonds, in an fascinating final, in which the winner stood firm just at the final gun.The Panthers showed against the probably strongest opponent of the Central Division, that they’re in good shape for the season. With clever change between running and passing game, the Panthers crossed the hole pitch in their first drive and scored with a QB-Sneak against the physical strong and hart, but fair playing Diamonds. After a succesful 2 point conversion, the Panthers took an 8:0 lead. The excellent prepared Defense let nothing burn, and forced the Diamonds always to punt. Just after the 2nd  quarter had started, the Panthers improved their lead to 14:0, with a 70 yards TD run. The Panthers Defense prevented all further tries of the Diamonds to score and forced with their aggressive play a Safety, what gave the Panthers a 16:0 lead at the break. After the break it looked, as if the Diamonds Coaches had found the right words for their boys, the Diamonds started tremendous and reached the Panthers 10 yard line directly with the Kick Off Return. But after that, the Panthers Red Zone Defense was on the spot and foiled 3 tries of them to reach the endzone, so that the Daimonds had to content with a field goal. Alas, the Panthers Offense missed their penetrating power in the next drives, and had to give the ball away by punt. The Diamonds managed with a 50 yards TD pass and a succesful PAT, to shorten their backlock to 16:10, so that they began the last quarter with new hopes. But their hopes was soon destroyed by another big play of the Panthers, which extended their lead to reassuring 12 points, after the 2 point conversion was also succesful. The victory was established, as the Diamonds could only score with another field goal.
